] To create a modern Vietnam, the French authority decided to rebuild a part of Hanoi with modern architecture. But in 1920, Hanoi was struck by an epidemic called plague.
] The french part of Hanoi had well laid out sewer system, whereas the native city wasn't provided with any modern facility.
] Since the sewer system was common for both the cities, it became an ideal breeding ground for rats.
] These sewers also served as a great transport system allowing the rats to move from old city to the new city.
] These rats also entered houses of the people through sewage pipes, spread plague and threatened their lives.
