Lord Dalhousie followed the policy of annexation of kingdoms by his Doctrine of Lapse. In this policy, the states where rulers had died without any natural heir, were annexed and the government went to British hands. Satara, Nagpur and Jhansi were annexed under this policy. The British refused to recognize the adopted son of Rani Lakshmi Bai as the successor of the throne in Jhansi.

Dalhousie also annexed Oudh(or Awadh) on the pretext of maladministration. The whole Control of the state went to their hands.(The British hands)

Baji Rao II, the last Peshwa, adopted Nana Sahib as his son. After his death, they refused to recognize Nana Sahib as the successor to the throne.

Also, the Mughals were denied the right of inheritance after Bahadur Shah Zafar's death.
