It was the phase of industrialisation before the Industrial Revolution, where there was large- scale industrial production for an international market which was not factory based.
Impact:
(i) Full utilisation of family labour resources : By working for the merchants the poor peasants and the artisans could continue to remain in the countryside and cultivate their small plots.
(ii) Income: Income from proto-industrial production supplemented their shrinking income from cultivation. It also allowed them a fuller use of their family labour resources.

proto industrialisation advanced, in the countryside. people with small plots of land and landless people started working for the merchants. the money which they earned helped them in solving financial crisis and help them to get more money on cultivating land and production
