Most of the people were illiterate and could not read the books. So the publishers printed books in such a way that even an illiterate could understand the theme of writing. For this the books were illustrated with pictures. The publishers mostly published ballads and folk tales so that even common people get interested in them and these could be orally transmitted through songs or recitations in gatherings. This reduced the gap between the hearing and reading public.
