pungi was considered a noise maker due to it creates shrill and unpleasant sound .Emperor aurangzeb banned pungi. while the shehnai was a natural hollow stem with 7 holes on its surface it was broader than pungi it was shehnai because it was first played in emperor aurangzeb's royal residence and was played by a barber "nai" hence called "sheh- nai" it was played in royal residences, royal courts marriages, in temples etc ...

Answer:

Pungi became the generic name for reeded noisemakers. A barber of a family of professional musicians decided to improve the tonal quality of the pungi. He chose a pipe with natural hollow stem that was longer and broader than the pungi, and made seven holes on the body of the pipe. When he played on it,soft and melodious sounds were produced.
