Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 – 1882) was one of America’s greatest poet and philosopher.

He championed Transcendentalism and Individualism. Transcendentalism is a philosophical movement which came up during 1820 – 1830, as an intellectual uprising against the sorry state of intellectualism and spirituality, prevalent then. The main tenet of Transcendentalism, is the belief that everyone is good, it is the corrupt society and institutions, which spoil them.

He was also strongly opposed to slavery.

Emerson’s poems and writings reflected his beliefs and it had a major impact in America.
