while the shehnai was a natural hollow stem with 7 holes on its surface it was broader than pungi it was shehnai because it was first played in emperor aurangzeb's royal residence and was played by a barber "nai" hence called "sheh- nai" it was played in royal residences, royal courts marriages, in temples etc ...

Pungi' a musical instrument was banned because of its shrill and unpleasant sound. But a nai modified and perfected it and played it for the first time an Shah's chamber, thus it came to be known as 'Shehnai'..
