How did Robert mugabe misuse his power to become an automatic rule

Using his power, all public protests and demonstrations against government was made illegal. So nobody was allowed to crtisise the President. People were not allowed to express freely in public and take political actions. He also harassed the journalists who went against them and ignored court judgements. He ruled the country the way he liked and did not abide by the democratic rules.
