The author slowly and surely builds up the atmosphere of strangeness, supernaturalism, suspense and mystery leading upto the climax in the story by using different figures of speech like metaphor, personification, imagery and alliteration.

He follows the style of a third person narration which makes the story even more mysterious. He has created an eerie atmosphere in the story by mentioning the mysterious sad sounds of pine trees, indicating that something evil was to happen.

He has given the following details to further build up the eerie atmosphere of
suspense and fear in the story:-

"....returning after dark, when he would take a short cut through the pine forest."

"He carried a torch and its gleam- the batteries were running down."

"He had no eyes, ears, nose or mouth."

"The torch fell from his trembling hands."

"....he saw a lantern swinging in the middle of the path."

"... And that's when the wind blew out the lamp."

In order to create an atmosphere of strange Ness mystery and supernaturalism in the story the writer uses the most appropriate and suggestive words in story like in the line 'when there was a strong wind the pine trees made a sad eerie sounds that kepthe most of the people on the main road' this creattach an atmosphere of strangeness
While making his way through the forest he comes across a weeping boy who does not haverify any facial features but a flat smooth canvass he gets frightened and runs and comes across a watchman who also does not have any facial featers just like the boy which isn't the reality but his imagination sthe he just fancies all this makes the story supernatural
