How did rutherford come to conclusion that most of the space in an atom is empty?

After his bombardment experiment on gold foil he saw that about 95 % of the bombardment pass through the foil ...only few got reflected or a bit deflected ....hence he concluded that space is empty and mass is concentrated at the center only .
