Lord Rutherford explained that the centre of the atom had a very small nucleus as compared to the whole atom

this nucleus had protons fixed in it (till that time NEUTRONS were not dicovered) and there were electrons all around this nucleus distributed in shells. This atomic model was like our present solar system, the electrons revolved around the nucleus just like planets do around the Sun.
