Ernest Rutherford, Hans Geiger and Ernest Marsden carried out their Gold Foil Experiment to observe the effect of alpha particles on matter. ... He then hypothisized that these particles would penetrate a thin metal foil, although they may scatter slightly because of the charge in the metal atom's subatomic particles.

In 1911 Lord Rutherford carried out an experiment known as "Alpha particles scattering experiment".
Rutherford bombarded a thin sheet of gold (0.00004cm thickness) with alpha particles (positively charged particles formed by removal of 2 electrons from Helium)in an evacuated chamber.
Rutherford's observations of this experiment were:
● Most of the alpha particles passed straight through the foil witjout any deflection.
● A small fraction of them were deflected from their original path by small angles.
● Only a few particles bounced back.
