According to Gandhi Ji salt was something that was consumed by both poor and rich alike.Also it was one of the most essential food item. Government had taken monopoly over its production. Therefore Gandhi Ji with is 77 or 78 trusted volunteers marched from sabarmati to dandi for manufacturing salt by evaporation. It was also effective tools of resistance as during march Gandhi Ji met various people and taught them real meaning of swaraj and non - violence.
By peacefully violating the law Gandhi set an example to the whole nation that how to outshine the ruler in a non- violent manner. Thus the salt march was an effective symbol of resistance against colonialism.
