Mahatma Gandhi believed that salt was a powerful symbol which could unite all Indians. On 3rd January 1930 he sent a letter ton Viceroy Lord Irwin stating 11 demand which were wide ranging to satisfy all communities but the most important was aboilition of salt tax because :-
1. Salt was consumed by both rich and poor alike and was an essential item of food.
2.The monopoly of producing salt and imposing salt tax was most oppressive policy of British.
