Reach for the Top is story about Santosh Yadav who has been portrayed as a decisive, firm-willed, adventurous, and courageous, girl gifted with a logical mind and mental and physical robustness. Born in Haryana, in a small village she had an independent personality and wanted to live life on her own terms. She was aware that her gender-biased, patriarchal, and rigidly conventional family would pressurise her to abide by the customary way of life. However, she also knew that if she picks a right and a logical path, she can change others and win their backing and align them to her choices. Opposed to gender discrimination, she repelled the pressure to get wedded at the young age of 16.

EXPLANATION:

  • Defying tradition, Santosh Yadav, she got admitted in a school in Delhi. When her parents denied to pay for her education, she told them that she would take up a part-time job to pay her school fees.
  • Recognising and understanding Santosh’s determination, her parents had to submit. Choosing mountaineering as a career was also Santosh’s independent decision.
  • However, she tried her best not to upset her parents and had written a letter, apologising to her father for not having taken his permission prior to joining the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering, Uttarkashi. Thus, despite all the odds, Santosh picked for herself the path that was absolutely unheard of and unthinkable for girls in from her orthodox society. She, therefore, was able to carve her own destiny.
