Girdling experiment is used to prove that food is transported through the phloem. In this experiment, the bark of the tree is removed forming a girdle. ( bark includes phloem and cambium, and not xylem) the woody xylem is intact. So we observe that water and minerals reach the leaves but the food prepared in the leaves does not reach the roots. These photosynthate get accumulated above the removed region proving that phloem is responsible for transport of food
