American was virulently “anti colonial” and pushed this approach with vigour both during and after the war

Maintaining the larger colonies required a large supporting infrastructure e.g. the Suez Canal, refuelling points such Aiden, etc

The colonies themselves had become progressively “disinclined” to be part of an Empire - it could be argued that WW 2 acted as a temporary stopper on their aspirations - I’m thinking India here
