When the beggar was first employed, Olga did all the work for him. She chopped wood, and did all other work which was assigned to him. At first she called him a dot (drunkard) but shed tears for him in pity too. The beggar felt very bad and ashamed. He knew he was weak due to drinking. But seeing Goa's condition made him feel shameful. He was willing to work and live a respectable life because he didn't want Olga's sacrifices to go in vain.

The life of Lushkoff got changed after meeting Sergei. This person has sent the beggar to his friend recommending them to give him the copying work. This was the employment given to beggar to chop wood. The author gave a valuable advice to the beggar to work really hard and stay away from boozing.
