What is the punishment for ragging?
The Karnataka Education Act, 1983 section 116 provides punishment up to 1 year imprisonment or fine which may extend to ₹2000 or both. The Assam Prohibition of Ragging Act, 1998 section 4 also provides punishment up to 6 months imprisonment or fine which may extend to ₹10000 or both.
Some of the reasons given by students for ragging are they were also ragged by their seniors; sense of superiority; and introduction. Other factors perpetuating ragging are use of alcohol in hostels and lack of implementation of serious anti-ragging measures by college authorities.
