The caste system in India has prevailed since the ancient times. But it has evolved with time. One such unique evolution was the formation of Jatis which were based on the occupation of people. Earlier there were four castes - Brahmins or priests, Kshatriyas or rulers, Vaishyas or merchants and farmers and Shudras or artisans. But with the growth in economy there was a need for people with new skills. Hence the smaller castes or Jatis emerged within the varnas. New tribes and social group were included in the caste - based society and given the status of Jatis. Many tribes became a part of the caste system of which only the powerful tribal families joined the ruling class while others joined the lower Jatis.
