Jijabai Shahji Bhosale or Rajmata Jijabai was the mother of Shivaji, founder of the Maratha Empire.
Born on the 12th of January 1598 to Lakhojirao Jadhav of Deulgaon and Mhalsabai at Sindkhed Raja, Buldhana, Maharashtra. She was married to Shahji Raje Bhonsle at the age of 8, Shahji himself was hardly 12 and Jijabai was his first wife. Due to difference in the background and status of the two families, Jijabai’s farther was not pleased to marry his daughter to Shahji. He had hoped that his daughter will be married to a higher house. Her father’s unhappiness impacted Jijabai at a young age and affected her attitude towards her husband and his family, as a result she and Shahji grew estranged with time. Shahji married multiple times. Jijabai and Shahji had 8 children out of which two reached adulthood- Sambhaji and Shivaji.
