Some Russian socialists felt that the Russian peasant tradition of sharing the land according to commune (mir) made them natural socialists. They felt that peasants, rather than workers, would be the main force behind the revolution. They felt that Russia could become socialist more quickly than other countries.

The Socialist Revolutionaries believed that the labour class, peasants and industrial proletariats would be the revolutionary class in Russia. Whereas Russian Socialist Democrats defined class membership in terms of ownership of means of production.  The Socialist Revolutionaries like Chernov and others defined class membership in terms of extraction of surplus value of labour.
