Answer:

The Sinhalese were in majority, and hence, after being elected to power, the Sinhalese leaders followed a series of majoritarian policies in order to ascertain the supremacy of their community. This strained the relationship between the Sinhalese and the Tamilians. This finally culminated in a civil war, with the Tamilians demanding the formation of an independent Tamil state in the northern and eastern parts of Sri Lanka. Thousands of people were killed in the civil war.

The government brutally supressed the Tamils and thousands of them were killed in large numbers. After the death of the Tamil leader in Sri Lanka, it seems that the civil war is now over.
