Answer:

One of western India’s major trading towns and ports was Surat. This city flourished on the banks of the river Tapti. It was the major gateway for trade with west Asia. Surat was a cosmopolitan city and merchants from different parts of the country Multanis, Kashmiris, Bohra-muslim and Banias lived here. In the 17th century, the British, Dutch and the French established their trading factory in Surat. It was a major center of export of textiles, Indigo and sugar. It was the point of departure for the Muslim pilgrims to Mecca. It was the terminus of an overland route between Agra and Delhi. Surat provided a platform for the connections with Arabian Sea and markets from east and West. Other places found in Surat were customs houses, the mint and bazaars.
