There is a large number of temples in different towns of our country. That is why, these town are came to be known as Temple towns.
A classic example is Tanjore (modern Tanjavur) which was the capital of the Cholas but was more popular for its temples. Tanjore developed into a developing town largely because of its temples.
The Cholas built Grand temples at khajuraho, odisha, mathura and Banaras making these temple towns. The, Somnath and kanchipuram are some of other famous temple towns.
