Tenali Ramakrishna was an Indian poet, scholar, thinker and a special advisor in the court of Sri Krishnadevaraya.
EXPLANATION:
- Tenali Ram won the bet using his wit and intelligence. In the story Tenali Paints a Horse an artist had come to show his paintings to the king. The king was pleased seeing the paintings, however Tenali Ram, one of the courtiers looked displeased and started pointing at flaws in the paintings. The king got angry at Tenali Ram and said all things cannot be painted and you must imagine the missing bites of the painting.
- However Tenali Ram told the king that he could paint better than the artist and the King bet a bag of gold if Tenali Ram could paint better than the artist and gave Tenali Ram one month’s time. When Tenali Ram brings his painting after one month and the king sees the painting all he gets to see a plain canvas some curved strokes of black on the right-hand edge with some tuft of green below it.
- When king angrily questions Tenali Ram about the painting Tenali Ram states that he had drawn a splendid stallion with a white stare on its forehead and that which had a polished leather saddle on its back. But when the King says that he could not see anything in that painting, Tenali Ram wittily states it was the king who had told him that one must use their imagination when they look at paintings.
- Hence, the king must imagine that the rest of the horse is outside the canvas grazing at lush green grass and what is in the canvas was the tail of the horse. Seeing Tenali Ram’s cleverness the king was pleased and gave Tenali Ram the bag of gold. This way Tenali Ram had won the bet.
