Motor vehicle accidents (MVAs) are the most frequent type of trauma experienced by American males each year and the second most frequent trauma experienced by American females. On average, 1% of the United States population is injured in a MVA each year. That translates into over 3 million individuals who are injured in MVAs on a yearly basis. Fortunately, fatalities are rare relative to the total number of people injured. Approximately 40,000 individuals are killed in the United States each year in MVAs. Similar injury and fatality rates have been reported in other industrialized nations such as Canada, Australia, Great Britain, and Germany.
