The African-American athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos received the gold and bronze medals wearing no socks to represent black poverty. During the American national anthem , they recited it with heads bowed down and fists with black gloves clenched and held high in the air to represent black power. Peter Norman also wore a human rights badge on his uniform to show support to the athletes. By this gesture they drew international attention to racism in the USA.
