Answer:

Kalinga (mordern orrissa) was an independent state on the border of the vast Mauryan empire. It controlled the routes to the south India by land and sea. Ashoka followed the policy of Digvijaya (victory in all direction). Thus Ashoka invaded Kalinga in 261 B.C. In the war 100000 people died and 150000 were wounded and made prisoners of the war. The slight of such a massacre of human lives and sufferings of the wounded made deep impression on Ashoka's mind. The unhappiness of women and children made him very sad. He decided to devote the rest of the life to spread Dharma. Dharmavijaya became the good of Ashoka's life. He is the first emperor in the history of the world to give up war after victory.

After his accession to the throne Ashoka fought one major war that was Kalinga war. ... On conquering Kalinga Ashoka's army killed lakhs of people and thousands of people deported. This massacre changed the heart of Ashoka. Ashoka ideologically appealed the tribal and frontier people to follow the principal of Dhamma.
