Ashoka had the policy of direct conquest he could not tolerate any independent kingdoms around his territory at that time Kalinga was an independent Kingdom around Ashoka territory so he invaded Kalinga in 261 BC as a result the Magadhan army won the battle but the battle followed heavy losses around 10 lakh people were killed and 15 lacs people were taken for prisoners This made Ashoka very sad and he thought that he would not fight anymore wars and would persuade people to live in peace so, after the Kalinga War( the policy of conquest )Digvijay was translated to Dhamma ghosha or Dhamma Vijaya( the policy of Dhamma)
