The Bishop was heartbroken when he found out that the convict has stolen a last memory of his mother from him, her candle sticks. But he did not informed the police as he thought that the candlesticks now belonged to the convict and would help him to start afresh in life. It reflected his kindness and good character.

The Bishop was hurt considerably when he came to know the convict had escaped with his candlesticks. The candlesticks were very dear to him as they were the last gift from his mother. This shows he too had normal emotions in his heart like any other human being. However, he knew how to do kind, sympathetic, and righteous deeds. He knew saving a man's soul was far more important than candlesticks. That's why he lied to the Gendarmes that he had gifted the candlesticks to him. And this kind lie transformed the convict into a good human being again.
