The boys and Lucia became homeless orphans after the destruction of their family life. The worst happened after a bomb destroyed their home. They had been living a comfortable and cultured life; now they were thrown onto the streets. And they suffered horribly form starvation and cold. They built a shelter for themselves amidst the rubble of their broken home. The starvation and exposure to extreme cold affected Lucia  with tuberculosis of the spine. The boys took her to a hospital and worked day and night to pay for the costly treatment of their sister.

The war had ruined the family of the boys and Lucia by killing their father and destroying  their house  due to bombing. For months they kept themselves  alive  in some shelter . The boys joined the resistance movement,  and when the war was over they came back to their sister , who by then had become  a victim of spinal tuberculosis.
