Nicola and Jacopo ran all kinds of errands for the narrator such as getting him a pack of American cigarettes, buying tickets for the opera, help him with the name of a good restaurant where the narrator and his companion could eat and also, take them sightseeing around the town of Verona plus shining his shoes and selling him a basketful of strawberries.

The two boys satisfy needs of author if he wanted a pack of American cigarettes, they would bring them for him. if he wanted seats for the Opera or the name of a good restaurant they would help him. In this way the boys proved extremely useful for author.
