As Nicola and Jacopo did not want to share their problems with the narrator they tried to prevent him.
However, they did not succeed.

the two boys were not willing to earn sympathy. the two boys Nicola and jacopo made the author stay out of the villa and insisted him to have some chat at the nearby tea stall by this way they tried to prevent the author from finding the secret but the author being curious some how found their secret but was very careful not to expose. I hope my answer earns a smile.
