Nagodas were the sericulturists in Bengal who used to produce Silk.
While Bengal was ruled by the English East India Company, the officials began manipulating the Nagodas.
They were obliged to weave for little wages and were made the company's bonded labourers, denying a chance to seek out any other means of living.
Under the Company they were forced to live like slaves. Workers who did not wish to obey were tortured and seized their properties.
Collectively, the Nagodas chose to abandon their traditional profession, since it did not help them earn a living.
