I assume gain foothold means gain control.

British EIC ( EAST INDIA COMPANY) came to India for trade purposes. As any other company, they wanted to maximize profit and minimize expense and they best way they found to do it was through tax free trading. They requested local nawabs to exclude their taxes and if the nawabs refused, they teamed up with other rulers from india to eliminate the common enemy. They did this on and on until they gained maximum control over most parts of the massive India.

The British company started doing trade in India. First they buy from their country in more prise and sold it in least price. This is how it consolidated its power .
