Answer:

When the British came to India for trading purposes, they noticed that the kings who used to rule the states of India did not have any sort of unity among them. They used to have wars all the time and that's when the Brits found a golden chance to gain power over Indian subcontinent. India had lots of riches and the land was pretty fertile as well. They used Indian sources for their own benefit and they also gained political power over the states by various means like subsidiary alliance, doctrine of lapse etc.
