Main intention of British was to get as much benefits as possible from India. However they did some good work to India since it was very important for them to rule India.

1. Social Reforms

The Religious and Social Reform of India started with the influence of Western culture and education. British supported Indian reformers in eradication of evil practices.
They introduced
         1. Widows' Remarriage Act, 1856
        2. Abolition of Sati : 1829
         3. child marriage restraint act
         4. Act against child labour ( This was not so effective)

2. English Education
Yes ! Even though their intention was to get cheap labour, ease of administration, Even though it impacted on regional languages and culture, English education was one of the important thing which opened the world for us !!
We learnt lot from western world and it helped to improve our knowledge and  thinking style.

3. Transportation and communication
They improved transportation and communication for ease of administration
  a. Indian railway
   b. Posts and telegraph ..

4. India Census ( Started 1871 , frequency  once in 10 years )
British started the census to get the statistical data of  the age, caste, religion, occupation, education, and infirmities of the population in the year 1871.

5. Geological survey of India (1851)
This institution made maps of India . Believe me on not , many places & villages  of India still uses the maps made during British time!!.
