During the revolt of 1857, for the first time in history the Britishers were facing the resistance from the Indians and the Britishers were put in a huge spot of bother, a lot of them were killed during that time and they had to do something of a huge significance to make a mark authority over the rebels.
So the princesses during that period of time who showed loyalties to the britishers were presented with a lot of gifts and they were given the right to hold on to their titles giving them the opportunity to rule but under the supervision of the British government.
