British sow the seeds of communalism in India through the following: a. The British policy of Divide and rule sought to create division between the Hindus and Muslims. b. For instance, after the revolt of 1857, Muslim community was looked with suspicion, their property was confiscated. c. The British also took advantage of the economic and educational backwardness of the Muslims and incited them against the Hindus. d. The British encouraged the formation of Muslim league to promote the interests of Muslim. e. The Partition of Bengal, passing of Morely minto reforms which provided for separate electorates for Muslims were deliberate attempts to break the unity of the national movement. f. All this led to the demand for a separate Muslim state, as Muslims felt alienated and declared that Hindus and Muslims as two different nationalities. The Partition of the country became inevitable.
