In the second of the Four Noble Truths, the Buddha identified tanha as a principal cause in the arising of dukkha (suffering, pain, unsatisfactoriness). The tanha, states Walpola Rahula, or "thirst, desire, greed, craving" is what manifests as suffering and rebirths.
