The following are the stages through which the civil disobedience movement came into force:
1. M.K. Gandhi launched the "Salt March" from his spiritual retreat in against the unjust salt laws introduced by the Colonial Government.
2. As part of the salt march, thousands of people broke the salt laws by manufacturing salt and demonstrated in front of the salt factories of the colonial government.
3. The rich Patidars of Gujarat and the Jats of U.P. actively participated in the movement.
4. The rich peasants who were badly hit by the trade depression and continuous falling of prices supported the movement with great enthusiasm.
5. As the depression recapitulated and cash statement diminished, the poor tenants found it difficult to pay the rent on time. In lack of money, they wanted the landlords to remit the rent thus they joined this movement.
6. The manufacturers and merchants gave their support to this movement by providing financial aid to the movement.
7. This was the first movement in which women participated in a large number.
