Wool was the primary dress material in England and western Europe, prior to the late 1600s’. It was the British East India Company, which took cotton from India during the 1690s. This gained popularity as dress material and for other purposes, so much so that, Britain overtook India as the leading cotton textile manufacturer, in the 19th century. Innovations in textile machinery during this time, helped Britain to achieve this.

Muslin cloth and Indian calico were causing threat to the merchants back in England, specially in Manchester and Lancashire.

The quality of goods made by these clothes where very good and thus, the market of England faced a tough competition.

This started to affect the economy of England negatively and so, the production of those clothes were banned.
