Answer:
Explanation: Indigo cultivation began in the year 1777 in Bengal. It was the most lucrative crop during that period because of the high demand of blue dye in Europe. The farmers were forced to take up the cultivation of Indigo by the Europeans.
The farmers soon displayed their anger and frustration and started revolting against the planters. They took up the following steps to fight against the planters
- They stopped growing indigo and started cultivating cash crops like paddy which gave them better returns.
- The cultivators resorted to acts like attacking policemen who intervened.
- They stopped paying rents to the planters.
- During 1859 the revolt took shape of a well organized protest when thousands of Ryots in Bengal refused to cultivate Indigo.
- Indigo factories came under attack from the farmers. They attacked the premises with weapons.
- Women too joined the protest with pots and pan.
Hope this helps.
