When Britain occupied India, they recognized that one of the main chances of income and fame were due to textile industry and the fact that we are primarily using our own cloth also made them uncomfortable with the situation.
Britain introduced their own textiles into our countries in the hopes to increase Britain's own economic income which is an obvious plus point to them and also decrease our own income and job opportunities so that we Indians will be completely dependent on British for jobs which will have sufficient enough influence to control the community.
So this finally lead to the decrease in the availability of jobs and many people who are dependent on the local or Indian textiles for income were severely affected and were also forced to depend on other skills to earn income which is not their actual forte. People who are very much hopeless decided to commit suicide.
This also lead to decrease in the usage of Indian textiles thus leading to low popularity of our textiles.

Textile Industry in India

The British eliminated existing traders and brokers connected with cloth trade.

Instead, they appointed a gomastha to supervise weavers, collect supplies and to examine the quality of cloth.

The weavers were not allowed to deal with other buyers.

The weavers were not permitted to sell to different buyers.

The Company paid measly rates for the clothes.

Thus, weavers either migrated to other areas, or took up agriculture.
