The Dual System of Government benefit the East India Company by the direct collection of revenue.

  • The English East India Company became the true sovereign of Bengal after victories at Plassey and Buxar. The army had fallen under its influence.
  • Revenue started to be received directly by the company's officials. The Nawab was granted a small amount of money to run the government.
  • The British, therefore, had all the power and revenue, but no obligation. The Nawab, on the other hand, had all the responsibility, but no control and no reliable source of revenue.
  • This unusual structure was known as the Dual system.
  • Under this structure, the people of Bengal suffered tremendously. During the Bengal famine of 1770 neither the company nor the nawab provided the citizens with any relief.
