The English East India company leased land from the monarch of Vijaynagar in order to develop a trading hub. They were given a place near or on the outskirts of Madraspatnam, a fishing community. Fort St.George was erected there by the British. They gradually captured all of the neighbouring lands over the next few decades. The Nizam of Hyderabad formed an alliance with the British to fight Tipu Sultan of Mysore, a mutual foe. After capturing Mysore, the Company gained control over nearly the whole southern region.
