Answer:

It would seem appropriate to refine this question to the most Western European countries: namely UK, Spain, Italy, Benelux, France, Switzerland and Germany.

Their power stems primarily from the emergence of the Roman Empire that allow the development of primary technologies (agriculture, weaponery, etc.) and trade which enable the development economic poles across those regions that have usually remained and developed through the centuries.

Accelerate a couple centuries and the quest for land discovery that led to the colonization of most of the world from XVI-XVIIIth century by those same European countries helped them consolidate their power by enabling them to trade within their colony and with the relative peace that took place in Europe. Furthermore exploiting and trading their colony’s resources further contributed to strengthening Europe’s power over the world.

Because of colonization, Europe has spread the adoption of its catholic/Protestant values accross the world which has also contributed to the adoption of its capitalistic model for the world, which it has imposed to other countries.

Because Europe has created the institutions and the system in which it evolves, it has designed it to maintain and support its power. Power attracts power as you can see, it is like a never ending “virtuous” (not so sure about that term though!) circle.
