After the death of Aurangazeb, Bengal Nawabs asserted freedom and hence the East India Company had to pay duty. The East India Company had refused to do so and hence these events culminated in armed conflict with the Nawab of Bengal (Battle of Plassey). After winning the war, The East India Company had huge political, territorial and military power.
