In large part Rome was able to establish its hegemony by expanding a sort of citizenship to many of the people it annexed. Military expansion contributed to economic growth, taking the poor and looting inhabitants back to Rome, which in turn changed Rome's city and Roman society.
Explanation:
- Romans conquered many areas and regulated trading routes as Roman empire expanded. This helped Roman generals & merchants to acquire riches from plunder & trading. Wealthy families owned vast agricultural lands and used slaves from captured areas in Rome to man the farms.
- They were able to produce tons of cheap food which caused the smaller Roman farmers to go bankrupt and lose their fields. The poor farmers migrated to the crowded town to seek jobs, but many poor people remained unemployed. Major divide had emerged between the wealthy and the poor.
- Greed and corruption replaced the early Roman republic's positive virtues, which were hard labor & devotion to duties.
